How to make an igloo like that of the Inuit

The Inuit are a group of indigenous people from the Arctic region of North America. Known for their ingenuity and perseverance to survive in the most difficult environment on Earth. The Inuit have adapted to living in extreme cold. Its most famous construction, recognized instantly, is the igloo. It is mainly used as a hunting refuge for the Inuit. These igloos provide remarkable insulation and are relatively easy to construct. Research has shown that an igloo can be done in a matter of hours, which makes it perfect for creation in hunting sites in a variety of places. With a little knowledge, you can build igloos for most survivalists.

You will need to:
  • Snow
  • Snow shovel
Steps to follow:

one

Look for a flat place with compacted snow . There must be at least three feet of compacted snow in this place. You can also select a site that is on a hill and dig.

two

Mark the circle with sticks, this will be the base of the igloo.

3

Walk in the snow for several minutes to make sure you have compact snow. Then let the snow freeze, in a matter of half an hour. This will turn into very strong ice blocks.

4

Excavate the area of the circle to start cutting the blocks of snow, make sure the base is at a good level.

5

Cut snow blocks with a snow saw. They should be 6 inches to 12 inches thick. Make sure the blocks are strong, but not so big and heavy, as it will be difficult during construction.

6

Place the initial ring of snow blocks around its circular base. Place them firmly side by side, but with a slight inward inclination to begin the angle of the dome.

7

Place the successive layers of snow blocks on top of the base layer. These blocks will slightly decrease the height as you go. Overlap the joints of each layer to increase strength. Make sure the joints are firm and tight.

8

Build in a spiral until you reach the top of the dome. Cut the cornerstone (final block) to adapt to the differences as much as possible.

9

Fill all the cracks with snow. Be careful with the terminations.

10

Cut ventilation holes on the sides of your igloo to avoid suffocation.

eleven

Dig a hole for the entrance to the outside of the igloo.

12

Place snow around the igloo, this will add resistance to the structure. Be careful not to cover the ventilation holes. This will add strength to the structure.

Tips
  • Do not cut very heavy snow blocks so you can lift them. Be sure to plan each step of the construction process to avoid problems.
  • The construction of an igloo is at least a two-person job. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the details of building an igloo, before it to ensure safety. Do not light fire inside the igloo so you do not lack oxygen.
