How to make an external hard drive partition on Mac

You have an external hard drive where you would like, for example, to have both the Time Machine backup, as well as all your music files and your photos. To separate well both functions, the ideal thing is that you divide the hard disk in two partitions, being able to use all the space you have for totally different things. Making a hard drive partition is much more than creating two different folders, but where do you start? In .com we explain how to make an external hard drive partition on Mac.

Steps to follow:

one

Start by connecting the external hard drive to your Mac.

two

Then go to Finder> Applications> Utilities> Disk Utility. Double click on the latter.

3

A window will open in which column on the left will appear the different hard disks that are on your Mac (internal and external). Click on the one you want to partition.

4

In the tabs that appear at the top of the menu of the selected disk, click on " Partitions " and, once there, on the "+" symbol that appears in the lower part of the white box with the layout of the partitions.

5

The white rectangle will now appear divided in half in half. If you do not want the partitions to be the same, you only have to move the dividing line up or down to set how much you want each division to be.

6

Click on each of the partitions and put the name you want (you will also see how much space each one has). When you have finished, click on " Apply ".

7

A new dialog box will appear asking if you are sure. Click on " Create partitions ".

8

The process of creating the new partition will begin. You can follow its evolution in the lower part of the Disk Utility window. Be patient!

9

When the process finishes, the new partition will appear in the menu on the left, below the name of the hard drive.
