How to make backup copies

It is one of those things that we know we should do and that, however, we do not take seriously until we have a scare: backup copies . Having our most important files saved on an external hard drive or a disk partition and programming the system to make the copies automatically on a regular basis will save us more than one headache. Hard drives damaged by a storm, by a virus or simply because the computer decides to die will not carry the anguish of, in addition, having lost all our photos or jobs. In .com we tell you how to make backup copies.

Steps to follow:

one

First, decide where you want to make backup copies . The most common and practical is to have an external hard drive dedicated exclusively to that copy or, if we have a lot of space, make a partition in it and that the copy occupies only the space needed.

two

Decide what you want to protect in your copy : it is possible that the only thing you care about losing are the photos, that the most important thing is the text documents or that you care about everything. Keep this in mind when selecting which folders you want to back up, especially if you do not have much free space. Perhaps in that case it will also be useful to know other options such as backing up in the cloud.

All operating systems have already installed a tool to back up the system automatically. Find it and activate it, if it was not already. In Mac OS X it's about Time Machine, while in Windows it's about File History . There are also independent programs that are used to make the copies.

How often do you want backup copies to be made? What is the most appropriate? It depends above all on the use you give to your computer, although ideally they are quite frequent. In Time Machine, for example, what is configured by default is to keep backup copies of each hour of the last 24 hours, of each day of the last month and of each week of all previous months.
