How to connect two computers to the same monitor

There are many reasons why you may want to connect two computers to a single monitor . For example, it could be a space saving issue. It could be a matter of resources, maybe you only have one monitor and you do not want to buy another one. It may be necessary for a presentation. Whatever the reason, it is usually possible to connect two computers to the same monitor . The connection process involves the use of a relatively inexpensive routing device called the VGA switch box.

You will need to:
  • VGA distribution box
  • 3 VGA cables
  • 2 Hard disks of computers
  • 1 Monitor
  • VGA adapters (optional)
Steps to follow:

one

Check that the computer monitor and both devices support VGA / SVGA video signal. If any of the devices are not compatible with VGA / SVGA video signals, you will have to buy the right adapter for the device to be VGA compatible. For example, if you are using a digital computer monitor, connect a digital VGA signal adapter to the DVI port on the computer monitor.

two

Turn off both devices.

3

Plug one end of a VGA connector cable into the VGA port on the computer monitor . The VGA connector must be aligned so that the 15-pin connector inserts smoothly into the 15 pin slots in the VGA port. Turn the screws on the back of the VGA connector clockwise to tighten the screws and secure the cable in place. Connect the other end of this VGA connector cable to the VGA (monitor) port output on the VGA connection box.

4

Use another VGA cable to connect the VGA port of the first equipment to the VGA input port "1" or "A" in the VGA connection box.

5

Connect one end of the remaining VGA connector cable to the VGA port on the second computer. Connect the other end of this cable to the VGA input port "2" or "B" in the switch box.

6

Connect the cable of the VGA connection box to a wall outlet or power strip.

7

Start both computers. Turn on the computer monitor.

8

Turn on the VGA connection box. Set the switch box to the "1" or "A" position to see the first equipment display signal. Set the switch box to the "2" or "B" position to see the display signal from the second equipment.
