How to be a proofreader

The task of text revision occurs towards the end of the publication process, just before the final publication of a book or magazine. Because many eyes have seen the content at this point, a good proofreader must take this into account when reviewing the page, respecting decisions made by previous respondents about the use and style. You can make changes only when absolutely necessary. Despite the moderation needed to be a good proofreader, all writers, no matter how good they are, have been saved by a proofreader

Steps to follow:

one

Obtain a university degree. The vast majority of revision jobs require a degree in Spanish Philology, journalism or Librarianship. If you intend to review the content on a specific topic, a grade on this topic would be appropriate.

two

Volunteer to review the documents of the organizations to acquire the necessary experience in any work that needs to be corrected. This direct experience provides an education on its own, helping to identify different styles of writing, so you can become familiar with the styles and know what is appropriate and what is not.

3

Enroll in a revision certification course that gives accreditation in the type of correction you want to make. For example, the EEI Communications (eeicom.com) offers two days of full program of training in reading of tests that covers everything from learning the revision marks to avoiding common errors of correction of tests.

4

Join professional organizations oriented towards the process of reviewing the publication. These memberships serve as networks and opportunities for professional development, in addition to taking potential clients or employers. For example, the Association of Independent Publishers, Correctors and Indexers (afepi.ie) and the Society of Communications Technicians (stc.org) can keep you up to date on current industry trends and put you in touch with people or organizations that are looking for the assistance in correction.

Tips
  • Starting in any business can be difficult. Persistence and trust will help you get your first job in correction.
  • Avoid confusing "style correction" with correction. The "Style correction" is done early in the publishing process, and is a completely different task. Correction usually involves comparing the style correction with the final corrected edition to ensure that all changes have been accepted. In addition, it is the final complete process of reading through the content that guarantees that there are no errors introduced during the publication process and that all the components of the publication are correct.
