How to pray the rosary for a deceased person

Catholics pray the Holy Rosary for many intentions, including the eternal rest of souls. Even though it is possible to pray for someone who has died at any time with the rosary, very often prayers are recited with the Rosary on the vigil prior to the funeral.

You will need to:
  • rosary beads
Steps to follow:

one

Recite the rosary as you would normally, with the small exception explained in step 3. Make the sign of the cross, and begin with the rosary with the Apostles' Creed, reciting the Our Father and a Gloria three times.

two

Pray the holy rosary while remembering the glorious mysteries:

  • the resurrection of Jesus
  • the ascension of Jesus
  • the coming of the Holy Spirit
  • the assumption of Mary to heaven
  • and his coronation as queen of heaven.

If the prayer is in a group, announce each mystery before reciting each decade of ten accounts. Then, start praying the Our Father - in large accounts - and ten prayers of Hail Mary with the small beads. Large accounts also require a "Glory" before the mystery of the day has been announced or prayed.

3

Include a special prayer for the dead as you go through the beads of the rosary. After the "Glory" at the end of a decade, pray the prayer of Eternal Rest: "eternal rest grant you, O Lord, and shine the perpetual light, may it rest in peace, Amen."
