How to import 3D models into After Effects

After Effects can be used to create many visual effects, one of which is the appearance of a 3D world. Through the use of multiple 2D images, space and depth can be created 3D images. One limitation is that you can not create real 3D images with this program. However, you can import 3D images that have been created in other programs . You can import 3D models from other programs like Adobe itself or from another Maya .

You will need to:
  • After Effects
  • Maya or similar
  • Photoshop
Steps to follow:

Export your 3D image from Photoshop or Illustrator as VPE by clicking "File" and "Export for After Effects."

Import the VPE file into After Effects, click "File, " "Import, " and "File." Select the saved VPE file and click "Open." This will create a new image with a camera layer.

Use the camera tool to see the 3D object in your 3D space.

Repeat the process to import other 3D images and combine them in After Effects.

Tips
  • Some 3D applications such as Cinema 4D can export After Effects compositions directly.
  • You can not modify or create 3D models directly in After Effects.
