Connect a phone to the Internet for VoIP through Ethernet devices

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a telephone service that uses a high-speed Internet service, instead of a traditional telephone line, to make and receive phone calls. The VoIP service is commonly offered by your local cable company, as well as through national providers, such as Vonage, Skype and Magicjack. To connect your existing VoIP service phone, you need to connect a VoIP converter box designed to work with your VoIP service. The VoIP converter box connects to any computer via USB, or to the router via an Ethernet cable.

You will need to:
  • Ethernet cable
Steps to follow:

one

Disconnect the power cord from your modem.

two

Remove the Ethernet cable that connects the modem to the router from the back of the router. Connect the Ethernet cable to the "Internet" Ethernet port on the back of the VoIP device.

3

Connect a second Ethernet cable to the Ethernet output connector on the back of the VoIP device. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the port of the router that has the "Internet" label.

4

Connect the modem to the wall outlet. Wait 30 seconds and then connect the VoIP device to the power outlet.

5

Connect the phone cord connected to your phone to the phone port on the back of the VoIP device.
