How to create tables and graphs

Tables and graphs are often used together as visual aids to display data. Scientists and researchers use the data to provide evidence or validate an argument. For students, learning to draw and use tables and graphs is necessary to read the data correctly. If a chart or chart is wrong, it can falsify the data and can even change an argument or point of view.

You will need to:
  • Graph paper
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
Steps to follow:

one

Enter a title for the table . The title must be related to the displayed data. For example, it could be titled "Percentage of hours of activities in a day."

two

Use a ruler to draw the table. Tables contain rows and columns, with rows from left to right and columns that go up and down. Depending on the title and the amount of data you have, you will have to draw rows and columns accordingly.

3

Fill in the information in the table. The title of the column will tell you what kind of information to complete in each row. For example, a column titled "Activity" includes activities such as "Television" or "meals" in each row.

4

Draw a graph with a ruler. The type of graph you will draw depends on the type of data you want to display. Some data tables are more suitable for different types of graphics. For example, a bar graph is ideal for viewing different trials or experimental groups, while a linear xy chart is ideal for showing the relationship between dependent and independent variables, when both sets of data are numeric.

5

Name the information in the chart . Using the data table, place the data in the chart accordingly. For example, if the data table shows the correlation between television and brain functions, a table xy will have the data for television on the X axis, and brainwave data on the Y axis. Make sure you use the table as a guide for the type of graph you will draw.

Tips
  • Tables and graphs can also be made with the computer, with Microsoft programs.
