How to make a loom

Make this loom and use it to knit small scarves, ties and belts. You can also knit long pieces and sew together to make patchwork quilts. Turn the cardboard tubes to remove the already woven part. Use wool of different colors in the shuttle to make the different drawings. You can also attach other colors to the tubes. Look at the following article on how to make a loom.

You will need to:
  • A shoe box or a strong cardboard box
  • Thick cardboard or cardboard
  • 2 long cardboard tubes
  • 4 bands of elastic bands
  • Colored wool
  • Pencil, ruler and scissors
  • Glue and adhesive tape
Steps to follow:

one

First cut the sides of the box as in the drawing. Cut a piece of cardboard for the loom comb about 9 cm wide and as long as the box is wide. Make sure it fits well.

two

Fold the cardboard in half. Draw two horizontal lines at ½ cm and 2 cm from the fold. Mark spaces of ½ cm along both lines. Trace vertically two long lines of 2 cm and two short ones of ½ cm alternately.

3

Cut from the fold along all the drawn lines (a). Unfold the cardboard and cut along the fold a bit if and another piece not (b). Look at the drawing. Then when you have cut the indicated pieces, fold the short pieces by the line that goes to ½ cm of the fold and the lengths by the 2 cm line. Glue all loose tabs with ribbon ©. Tape along the fold on both sides of the cardboard (d). Cut with the scissors all the pieces of tape inside the spaces so that the gaps are open. This piece of cardboard will be the comb of the loom.

4

Then, using the base of a tube as a guide, draw four circles on the cardboard. Cut them a little larger than you have drawn them. Glue a circle to the ends of each tube.

5

Cut 15 strands of wool at least 50 cm long. Tie a strand around one end of a tube. Insert the other end of the strand through the first hole of the comb. Do the same with all the strands of wool by putting them one at a time for each of the holes of the comb. Observe the drawing.

6

Then place the comb in the center of the box. Put the tube with the wool at one end on the outside. Pass the loose ends of the wool on the opposite side of the box. Put the second tube over the ends of the wool. Secure these wool ends to the tube with adhesive tape (a). Tie two rubber bands together. Engage them on the tubes on one side of the box (b). Tie two more tires and hook them to the tubes on the other side of the box.

7

Then cut a piece of cardboard a little less than the width of the box giving it the shape indicated in the drawing. This will be the shuttle. Wrap a very long strand of wool in it.

8

Tie the end of the wool that is in the shuttle, to a woolen thread of the loom. Press the comb down and insert the shuttle between the strands of wool.

9

To weave the next time, lift the comb. Enter the shuttle on the opposite side. Squeeze the already woven part with the comb before making a new pass.
