How to use theodolites

The theodolite is a type of telescope that can be used both horizontally and vertically to measure angles. Theodolites are widely used by inspectors during construction projects. The instrument is operated by placing the telescope at a point, with the objective of the piece at the second measurement point, and then moving on to reading the measurement through the eyepiece.

Steps to follow:

one

Place the theodolite at the starting point for the measurement. The location of the instrument marks the first point in the angle you want to measure.

two

Adjust the height of the theodolite so that you can see comfortably through the eyepiece. Use the adjustment buttons on the instrument to adjust the height, lateral movement and focus.

3

Make sure that the theodolite is perfectly leveled by adjusting the plumb line. This piece is under the telescope, on the bottom of the instrument.

4

Look through the eyepiece, moving it up or down to adjust the measurement angle. A red line will highlight the areas that are being measured. The horizontal and vertical measurements will appear on the side of the instrument's viewing range.

Tips
  • The theodolites are very sensitive and should be handled with care. The slightest damage due to improper handling of the instrument can alter the readings and compromise their accuracy.
