How to anoint with oil as a Catholic

The anointing with oil is an ancient tradition often associated with religious practice. It is the process of applying oil or an oil cream to a person during a religious ceremony or blessing. For Catholics, anointing with oil is often used as a consecration and should not be performed by anyone, except a priest, unless the priest has given him advice to anoint someone else with oil.

If he is not a member of the clergy and wants to anoint someone with oil . The priest will give you personal and specific guidance on the process and will also consecrate, or bless, the oil for you.

To perform a consecration with oil, pour a small amount of oil on the right thumb.

Paint a cross with the thumb on the forehead of the person. As the cross is taken, say aloud the name of the person, then "I anoint you with oil in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit."

Recite the prayers your parish priest has advised you, with the person in question.

Tips
  • Store the oil at room temperature. It does not have to be consecrated more than once.
  • If you want to use a perfumed anointing oil, make sure that the person you join does not have allergies on the skin that can react with the specific perfume.
