How to clean the terminals of the car battery

It is common that over time, the battery terminals of our vehicle look bad or make a bad contact. This is usually because the metal of the terminals is sulfated. In this article we will see how to clean the battery terminals of the car .

You will need to:
  • Wrench or screwdriver
  • Metal barbed brush
  • Container with 500 ml of water and 2 tablespoons of baking soda or cola
  • Rags
Steps to follow:

one

A battery terminal with dirt or sulphated can make it difficult or even prevent our car from starting. The first thing we should do is have the car off and take a look at the battery terminals to confirm that they are sulphated or dirty. Sulfation is seen when the metal turns blue or greenish.

two

Loosen the screws or nuts that hold the battery cables, starting with the negative cable, using a screwdriver or a wrench. We will do the same with the right terminal, we will move the cables away from the metal and we will prevent them from coming into contact.

To remove the crust of dirt or sulfation we will use a container with water to which we will add a few tablespoons of sodium bicarbonate . Another alternative is to use cola, especially that of leading brands. We will jet our solution on the battery and let a few seconds pass for it to react. Next, we will give you a review with a cloth impregnated with the solution or if it is already clean, we will dry it with a cloth.

4

Once dry, we will rub the terminals with a brush of metallic bristles and the terminals that hold or screw the terminals, with this we will leave well scraped the dirt. We can finish the job with a sandpaper. Remove the remainder with another damp cloth and place the cables again.

5

Before placing the cables, some experts recommend spreading the terminals with a thin layer of Vaseline or grease to prevent them from returning to sulfate. In our case we can choose to put it on or not.
