How to choose the car seat for children correctly

When traveling by car it is always very important to take the necessary security measures, but even more so when traveling with children . In this way, one of the key points that we must take into account to transport our children safely is to correctly choose the car seat where they should be seated. We will choose the retention system based on the child's weight and height and never because of their age; so it will be necessary to update it as the child grows. Likewise, we must ensure that the chair is approved and carry the device or label that accredits it. So that you can make a good choice, in .com we tell you how to choose the car seat for children correctly.

Steps to follow:

one

Child restraint systems are classified by type approval groups and groups of chairs are established (0, 1, 2 and 3) that correspond to children according to their weight (never depending on age!). In addition, there are mixed chairs to use as children grow (group 0/1, group 1/2/3 ...).

two

Group 0

The chairs of this group are the smallest and correspond to children under 10 kg (which is usually up to 9 months approximately). We can choose a basket, which we will always install in the rear seats and in a transverse position; or a baby carrier, which can go in front or behind and in the opposite direction to the march. In all cases, the baby is tied to the safety seat by the harness of the chair itself.

3

Group 0+

These chairs correspond to children whose weight is less than 13 kg (up to 18 months approximately). As in the case of group 0, it will be baby carriers in which the little one is fastened with the harness of the car seat. If there is a passenger frontal airbag activated, we should install the baby carrier only on the rear seats of the vehicle.

4

Group 1

For children between 9 and 18 kg (approximately between 9 months and 4 years), we must choose group 1 retention systems. In this case, it will be chairs that we can install in the opposite direction to the march or in the rear seats, in the same sense. The child is still tied to the safety seat with the harness itself, while the chair is fixed to the car with the seat belt.

5

Group 2

When our little ones reach a weight between 15 and 25 kg (which usually corresponds to the age between 3 and 6 years), we will opt for a lifting chair of group 2. It already consists of a chair with a backrest that is installed in front of or behind the vehicle, in the direction of the march. In this case, the children are already fastened to the chair with the seat belt of the car.

6

Group 3

Finally, once the children have a weight between 22 and 36 kg (usually between 6 and 12 years), we will choose a chair or booster cushion . We can place them both in the front and in the rear of the vehicle and must go in the same direction of travel. For these child restraint systems, we will also use the car safety belt to hold children.

7

From 135 cm

Children who reach 1.35 m in height (usually at 12 years old) can directly use the vehicle's safety belts . In the case of children under 12 who reach this height and up to 150 cm, it is recommended to continue using a booster cushion. In all cases, the diagonal band of the belt must go through the clavicle, over the shoulder and close to the chest, while the ventral band should be as low as possible on the hip.

Tips
  • Adapts the child restraint system (SRI) to the progressive growth of the child.
  • Children learn by imitation, it is important that you are a good model: always use a seatbelt.
