How an ambulance should circulate

Some vehicles have traffic regulations different from the conventional, being able to skip traffic signals as well as speed limits. However, this can only be done by those who work in a special regime, specifically those who provide an urgent service, such as the police, firemen and health services, although always under common conditions for all of them that they must respect in all circumstances. If you do not know your traffic code, we show you, specifically, how an ambulance should circulate .

Steps to follow:

one

Ambulances and other health care vehicles are considered priority vehicles, as are police vehicles, fire fighting and civil protection and rescue. Therefore, they have priority of step compared to other vehicles and users on the road when they are in emergency service, both public and private. This means that they can exceed the speed limits and that they are exempt from respecting other traffic signs or regulations, always under a series of conditions that are indicated below.

two

Priority vehicles such as ambulances can exercise these special regime rights only when carrying out an urgent service, but they must always do so with the utmost caution and following a series of rules. So the ambulances must not violate the signals of the traffic lights or the priority of passage at the intersections until they are satisfied that:

  • Do not endanger pedestrians or other road users.
  • The drivers of the other vehicles have stopped or are willing to facilitate the operation of the priority vehicle.

On the other hand, an approved installation of light emitting devices as well as special acoustic signals in this type of vehicle is required, by means of a pertinent authorization from the corresponding Provincial Traffic Headquarters.

3

Likewise, when the drivers of priority vehicles and ambulances circulate by highway or expressway in service of an urgent nature without compromising the safety of users, they may turn back or half turn if they believe it necessary, as well as circulate in the opposite direction to that indicated the roadway always by the shoulder, and also penetrate through the transverse steps of the median.

4

On the other hand, the agents of the Authority that manage the surveillance, control and regulation of traffic can use or locate their own vehicles in the most appropriate area to provide the corresponding assistance to users.

In addition, it is mandatory that priority vehicles such as ambulances warn of their presence and character of urgent service through the simultaneous use of light signaling and special acoustic signal. However, the latter can be omitted when that fact does not entail any danger for the rest of users and as long as the use of the light signal is maintained.

Finally, the drivers of this type of vehicle must take into account that the infractions related to these traffic regulations are considered as serious.
