How to form plurals in French

Form the plural of many French names by simply adding an s at the end. French names, ending in -eu, -eau, and -au, usually have an additional x in plural. The nouns in French that end in -al, generally, form the plural by adding a -aux in the place of the-at the end. Nouns that end in -s, -x, y, z in their masculine form are not altered in the plural. The nouns ending in -an, -en and -on take an additional -ne in the feminine, in the singular. Add -nes in the plural.

Steps to follow:

one

Form the French plural of regular French names and adjectives, simply by adding a -s to the end of the word. Examples of this standard in the language include: "Le livre intéressant" (the interesting, singular book) versus "les livres intéressants" (interesting books, plural), "le stylo noir" (the black pencil, singular) vs "les stylos noirs "(the black feathers, plural), and" the steal see "(the green dress, singular) in front of" les robes vertes "(the green dresses, plural): the feminine ending in the noun" une robe "must to be in agreement with the adjective that ends, for what it is - it is in "vertes".

two

Form the French plural of nouns and adjectives that already have a -s, -x, or -z at the end of the singular word by retaining the original -s, -xo -z at the end. Examples of this standard in the language include: "le mauvais pays" (the bad country, singular) in front of "les pays mauvais" (the bad countries, plural), "Le Nez" (the nose, singular) in front of "les nez "(the noses, plural).

3

Form the French plural of the names and adjectives ending in -al, ail, or -au transforming the original ending to -aux. An example of this rule in the language includes: "Le Cheval royal" (the real horse, singular) in front of "les chevaux Royaux" (the real horses, plural).

4

Form the plural of nouns that end in -eu and -eau by adding an X to the end. Form the plural of adjectives that end in -eu, adding a -s at the end. Adjectives that end in -eau, form the plural by adding an -x in the end. An example of these rules in the language would be: "le cheveu bleu" (blue hair, singular) versus "les cheveux bleus" (blue hairs, plural), "le nouveau bouleau" (the new tree, singular) vs "Les Bouleaux nouveaux "(the new, plural forest).

5

Form the plural of nouns ending in -ou by adding an -x at the end. Form the plural of the adjectives ending in -ou by adding an -x at the end. An example of this in the language would be: "Le Bijou doux" (sweet, singular jewel) vs "Les Bijoux doux" (the sweet, plural jewels).

Tips
  • Be aware of the irregular formation of French nouns such as "l'oeil" (eye, singular) versus "les yeux" (eyes, plural), "madame" (lady, singular) versus "mesdames" (ladies, plural).
  • Note that some names follow the regular plural formation, but they are pronounced differently, such as "l'oeuf" (egg, singular) versus "les oeufs" (eggs, plural).
