How to explain Calvinism

In an edition of the magazine "Time" of 2009, the author David Van Biema, in an article entitled "10 things that change the world right now" pays a lot of attention to the movement of New Calvinism, where he identifies his main boss. Predestination, like "the belief that before the dawn of time, God decided that he would save (or not), not affected by any subsequent human action or decision" has historically been used in the acronym TULIP, coined for the first time more than 350 years.

You will need to:
  • Standard English version of the Bible
  • Bible New International Version
  • Greek cross lexicon-reference guide
  • "Institutes of the Christian Religion" by Calvin
Steps to follow:

one

Explain that in Calvinism, the position of humanity is sinful. Calvinism cites that people are completely enslaved to sin in thought and deed. Everything they do (whether intentionally or not) is tainted with sin, as indicated in the book of Romans, especially in chapters 1 through 6. This can be summarized in the "T" of the acronym of "total depravity" "

two

Keep in mind that a Calvinist remembers verses from the Bible, especially Ephesians 1 and Romans 9, which state that people were "saved" completely based on the will of God and were "chosen" as such before the foundation of the world. Remember this with the "U" in the acronym of "Unconditional Choice."

3

Consider the cross of Jesus Christ. The Calvinists establish that the death of Christ on the cross, (although he certainly has the ability or power to save everyone) is only for the "elect". Calvinists point to John 6, 17 and Romans 5:08 to 10, among other passages of the Bible, as support. Remember this with the "L" of the acronym which means "limited atonement".

4

Explain that the call to repentance of sins and belief in the Gospel (also known as "Born Again") is unthinkable if you are an "Elected" member. A Calvinist believes that a spiritually dead person regenerates with a new heart (based on Ezekiel 36) and in fact lives specifically to function with it. In other words, Jesus saves those he is trying to save. Calvinists cite John 6, Ephesians 2, Romans 9, Acts 13:48 and John 1:12 to 13, among other passages, as support. Remember this with the "I" of the acronym of "Irresistible Grace".

5

Understand that staying saved is not your job, it is God's. A Calvinist states that once they are "saved", they are kept that way by God. They point to John 10:27 to 28, 1 John 5, 1 Peter 1, Philippians 1: 6 and Romans 8: 1, among others, to support this position. Remember this concept with the "P" of the acronym of "The perseverance of the saints."

Tips
  • Read the Westminster Confession
  • Read the London Baptist Confession 1689
  • Hyper-Calvinism states that God put as much effort in sending the unbelievers to hell, as in the salvation of the believers. This is known as equality ultimity, although traditional Calvinists believe that it is an aberration
