How to clean a Nikon lens

Dust particles, pollen, animal hair or dandruff adhere to glassy surfaces. Fingerprints when you change lenses, also dirty the lenses of a camera. Periodic cleaning of your Nikon lens is important, since dust, dirt or smudges on the lens appear as dark or fuzzy spots on photographs.

You will need to:
  • Brush or compressed air
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Liquid for lens cleaning

Keep the lens suspended so that light is reflected on the glass, allowing you to see areas with dirt or stain problems.

Blow through the lens or use an air dryer to blow out dust, hair, or other debris from the cup.

Exhale in the glass of your Nikon lens to create a moisture film and rub the lens with a clean microfiber cloth to remove fingerprints and smudges. Move the fabric in a circular motion smoothly. Use a clean cloth if it is necessary to repeat the process. Dirt on the fabric could scratch the lens.

Pour a few drops of lens cleaning fluid into a clean microfiber cloth, and apply over the lens with it to remove stubborn or greasy stains. Let the glass of your Nikon lens dry for a few minutes.

Use a clear filter on top of the lens, such as a UV filter or skylight, to protect the glass lens from damage and dirt.
