How to create a vertical bar chart

The graphics allow their creators to transmit information in an easily understandable way, in a visually attractive and easy format. They can have different forms and some are more suitable than others to give different types of information. Pie charts are effective for displaying percentages, line charts help viewers better understand changes over time, and bar charts allow for clear comparisons of various amounts over time. The bar graphs are of two types: horizontal and vertical, with reference to the orientation of the bars of the graph in relation to their axes. In this article we are going to explain how to create a vertical bar chart step by step .

Steps to follow:

one

If you're wondering how to make a vertical bar graph, the first thing you'll have to do is gather all the information you'll need. When you already have it, then write the title of the graph and the names of the elements to be measured (data labels) on a horizontal line (data axis). Leave space between names so that the bars do not touch when you draw them. For example, to measure centimeters of rain per month, it points every month along the data axis, in this case in the horizontal .

two

Next, scale the units of measurement in a vertical line (axis of frequencies) to the left: to measure precipitation, start from zero and mark increments of one centimeter going up the axis. The frequency axis and the data axis must be joined at the lowest point of the frequency axis and the left end of the data axis.

3

Create the bars by drawing a vertical line from the data axis up to the corresponding amount on the frequency axis . For example, if the April rains are 15 centimeters, draw a bar with respect to the data axis in April to the 15-centimeter line. Draw horizontal lines (parallel to the data axis) from the frequency axis to make measurement easier. You should do the same with each year and month you want to analyze.

4

When finished you can paint all the bars with different colors to make the information easier to understand. For example, if you analyze the months of a single year you can use a single color or if you prefer one for each month. But if you analyze not only each month but also different years (as in the previous image), then it is better to paint the bars of a single color for each year, thus facilitating their reading.

5

Before ending it, make sure your vertical bar graph has everything you need :

  • Title
  • The vertical and horizontal axes
  • Labels or names of axes
  • The scale
  • All the bars, each one at its corresponding height
  • The bars highlighted in color
  • A legend, if necessary, for example to differentiate the colors of each year
