What museums are free on Sundays in the DF

Mexico City is a city alive and full of cultural activity, and proof of this is the myriad of museums and artistic spaces it houses. Many of them can be visited for free during some days of the week, usually on Sundays, or even daily. Here we give you a selection of some of the most outstanding museums that are free on Sundays in the DF

National Museum of Anthropology . Free on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., for all Mexicans and foreigners residing in Mexico. It has a total of 23 rooms, 12 of which are devoted to explaining the history of Mexicans before the arrival of the Spaniards. Of particular interest are the collections dedicated to the Mayan and Mexican cultures, without detracting from the collections of the Toltec or Teotihuacan cultures.

National Museum of Cultures . Free on Sundays, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The National Museum of Cultures houses around 14, 000 objects, representative of different eras and that come from practically the whole world.

National Center of the Arts (Cenart) . Monday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Created in 1994, seek to explore new ways of expressing and educating in the arts, as well as creating spaces for academic cooperation.

Diego Rivera Mural Museum . Every Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Located in the historic center of Mexico City, its goal is to preserve and disseminate the work of Diego Rivera and other artists of his time. It stands out because it contains Rivera's mural titled Dream of a Sunday afternoon in the Alameda Central.

National Museum of the Estampa . Free every Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Especially shows temporary exhibitions relating to the stamp, from the sixteenth to the twenty-first century, and its permanent collection holds up to 12, 000 pieces.

National Museum of History "Castillo de Chapultepec" . On Sundays, admission is free to national public and foreigners residing in Mexico, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Throughout its 20 rooms, it offers a complete historical view of Mexico, from the time of Spanish rule until its independence. It includes valuable works of art and some of its rooms are adorned with murals by painters such as Juan O'Gorman or Eduardo Solares.

National Museum of Art . Free admission every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. This museum collects the collections of other previous museums to offer the visitor a complete vision of Mexican art from its colonial beginnings to the first half of the 20th century, with more than 3, 000 pieces in its permanent exhibition.

Museum of Templo Mayor . Free admission on Sundays, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. In this museum, located in what was the most important building for Mexicans, is exhibited the highlights of the archaeological excavations carried out from 1978 to the present. The exhibition tour allows visitors to get to know the Mexican culture through its art and everyday objects.

Soumaya Museum . Plaza Carso Center: Free admission every day of the year, from 10.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. Centro de Plaza Loreto: also free admission, although on Tuesdays it is closed and on Saturdays it opens until 8 pm. In any of its two centers you can find magnificent artistic exhibitions: collections of antique objects, portraits and paintings that reflect Mexican history, pieces from Europe and a large number of sculptures by Rodin.

Estanquillo Museum . Free access every day, from Wednesday to Monday from 10 am to 6 pm. It houses one of the largest collections of chilango art, divided into five categories: photography, miniature and models, drawing and cartoons, engraving and also everyday life.

National Palace From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays. Inside you can admire the magnificent murals painted by Diego Rivera, the courtyards of the palace, the old chamber of deputies and other emblematic spaces, while you learn about the recent history of Mexico thanks to tour guides.

Pantheon Museum of San Fernando . From Tuesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., free admission. In this place are buried Benito Juárez, Margarita Maza, Vicente Guerrero, Ignacio Zaragoza and Melchor Ocampo, among other prominent figures. It is in itself a magnificent display of funerary art in a romantic style.

Andrés Blaisten Collection Museum . Open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is composed of a multitude of works of renowned Mexican artists from the New Spain period to the present time. Andrés Blaisten has the largest private collection of modern Mexican art, which is attested by his museum.

National Museum of Architecture . Sundays free entry, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Its main task is to promote the work of prominent Mexican and foreign authors in the field of architecture, and to disseminate this discipline among the general population with a multitude of traveling exhibitions.
