What are the road signs in Spain

In Spain, there are different types of traffic signs that regulate traffic in different ways: warning of danger, regulation, indication and works . It is essential to know all the signs in order to drive safely and avoid traffic accidents. In this article, we explain in detail what are the traffic signs in Spain.

Warning signs of danger

The warning signs of danger serve to indicate to the drivers of the road the proximity of a danger difficult to be perceived in time. In general, these are triangular signs with a white background and a red border, inside which we find the symbol identifying the danger. Among them we find the signs of:

  • Intersection
  • Traffic lights
  • Level crossing without barriers
  • Dangerous curves
  • Slippery pavement
  • Passage of domestic animals
  • Transverse wind
  • Circulation in both directions
  • Other dangers

Regulatory signs

Regulatory signs in Spain indicate the obligations, limitations or special prohibitions that drivers must take into account when driving on a road. In them, the color white on red predominates and they are subdivided in six different groups:

  • Priority signs : those in charge of reporting special priority rules at intersections or narrow passages.
  • Signs of prohibition of entrance : they prohibit the access to the users who find them in front in the direction of their march.
  • Signs of restriction of step : those who find these signals will be prohibited or limited access from that point.
  • Other signs of prohibition or restriction : in this group we find signs that prohibit certain actions such as turns and overtaking, as well as restrictions of speed, stop or parking.
  • Signs of obligation : these are those that indicate a mandatory circulation rule.
  • End signs of prohibition or restriction : this type of signal ends restrictions or prohibitions that earlier signs marked.

Signals of indication

The indication signals serve to provide the user with certain useful indications . In general, they are printed in white on a blue background, although there are also indications indicative of other colors. We can divide them into:

  • Signs of general indications: information on the type of road, the recommended speed, the direction of the road, dead ends ...
  • Lane signs : indications on lane typology, restrictions, etc.
  • Service signs: they inform about the services that are in the vicinity of this kilometric point.
  • Orientation signs: they provide indications about the directions, locations, places of interest within a population, etc.
  • Complementary panels: they express the distance between the signal and the indicated place.
  • Other signs

Signs of works

The signs of works in Spain are signs of different typologies but with a yellow background, a fact that indicates that it is a temporary and specific signaling due to works on the road.
