The names of the winds according to their origin

On Earth, wind is the mass movement of air in the atmosphere. In meteorology they are usually called winds according to their strength and the direction from which they blow. In this article, we explain the names of the winds according to their origin.

TRAMONTANA (north wind)

It is a cold and turbulent wind from the northeast or north that in Spain blows on the coasts of the archipelago of the Balearic Islands and Catalonia. This wind uses the north of the Pyrenees and the southeast of the central massif (France) as a zone of acceleration. When this wind blows the sky usually presents an intense blue color.

GREGARIO (northeast wind)

This wind is very characteristic of the archipelago of the Balearic Islands, where it blows cold and dry because it comes from the mainland . Its name comes from the Catalan and Aragonese sailors who used it in their trips to Greece.

LEVANTE (east wind)

This wind comes from the east on the Mediterranean coast of Spain and, in general, throughout the western Mediterranean. The wind brings mists and precipitation to the east face of the Rock of Gibraltar but causes dry weather on the western side of the Strait, especially on the Andalusian Atlantic coast.

SIROCO (southeast wind)

It comes from the Sahara and reaches hurricane speeds in northern Spain and southern Europe. Normally, it carries red dust from the Sahara and is associated with storms and heavy rains . The sirocco causes dry conditions on the north coast of Africa, storms in the Mediterranean Sea and humid and cold weather in Europe.

OSTRO (south wind)

It is described as a warm, humid wind that often carries rains, but is also sometimes identified with Lebeche and Sirocco.

LEBECHE (southwest wind)

Because of its origin, this wind often comes with sand and fine dust in suspension, coming from the Sahara desert. This wind is anticipated by the appearance of haze (warm haze) on the horizon to the south. The characteristic color of this haze is caused by the large amount of African dust it carries.

PONIENTE (west wind)

This wind carries out some moderation of the heat, while it tends to moderately increase the humidity of the sea.

MISTRAL (northwest wind)

It is a cold, dry and violent wind that currently reaches 100Km / h and reaches 200Km / h. When it blows very strong it is due to an increase in atmospheric pressure in northwestern Europe.
