First of all, make a backup copy of the files you want to keep. Connect an external hard drive to the computer and go copying one by one (the slowest, but the safest trick to not copy viruses) the files you do not want to lose.

The Windows Vista system itself includes a formatting option, so you do not have to enter the console and enter the code. You are in Computer Management (Start> Control Panel> System and Maintenance> Administrative Tools).

It is possible that after double clicking on Computer Management, the system asks for an administrator password or asks you if you are sure. Enter the password and click OK.

A new navigation panel will open, in which you must click on Disk Management (inside Storage).

You will see a list of the different storage volumes of your computer. Right-click on the one you want to format (it's usually C :, but make sure it's the correct one so that you do not delete something you do not want), and in the menu that opens, click Format .

Now you have two options: customize the format (choose file system, size of the allocation unit, etc.) or format the volume with the default configuration, the most recommended if you do not want to risk unpleasant surprises. To do this, simply click on OK and, in the new dialog box, click on OK again. The hard disk will begin to format.
