How to make seaweed extract

Seaweed helps to mix a variety of ingredients, in addition to the addition of an increase in nutrients. Whether adding seaweed extract in a homemade or outdoor ice cream recipe for cosmetic uses or even making your own extract offers an economical alternative to the purchase. Take some kitchen items and some seaweed and cook an extract pot.

You will need to:
  • Seaweed, sushi type or green sea lettuce
  • Small sealed zipper bags
  • a medium or large pot
  • Wire mesh strainer
  • Cheesecloth
  • Container or jar with airtight lid
Steps to follow:

one

Fill the pot with water and bring to a boil. Turn off the heat and let the water rest.

two

Cut the algae -sized pieces of ice. Porphyra, which is used in sushi, or green sea lettuce, Ulva, are two of the very common types of algae. The algae classifications are divided into red, brown or green types based on color. All these groups are algae used in the production of commercial foods.

3

Add 2 liters of hot water from the algae in each bag. For example, a bag with two pieces of algae needs 4 liters of hot water. If possible, have an assistant hold the bag open to make it easier to stir the water. Drain the excess air and seal the bag well.

4

Place the bags in the hot water pot. Remove excess water if necessary to ensure that the bags are covered. Plunge underwater with a glass, a cup, or any other object. Schedule a timer for 20 minutes.

5

Remove a bag from the pot and check to see if the algae have dissolved. If the water has changed color, remove the bags with the algae .

6

Cover the wire mesh strainer with gauze. Place the strainer over the container to store the extract. Carefully empty a bag in the filter. Squeeze as much dissolved seaweed as possible. Continue with the remaining bags, without filling the filter too much.

7

Allow the filter to sit for the first 20 minutes. Then press gently with the back of a spoon. Do not press the solids through the gauze. Only the press to squeeze out any remaining liquid.

8

Seal the container and store it in the refrigerator until use.

Tips
  • Buy algae at a food or health grocery store to make food grade extracts for use in homemade ice cream recipes, toothpastes and more.
  • Collect algae from the beaches for use in the garden. Rinse gently with cold water to remove sand, salts and other debris. Once extracted, it must be diluted with 5 parts of water for an extracted part and feed the plants of vegetables and flowers.
  • Do not add a lot of pieces in a bag or use large bags. Large groups tend not to dissolve completely.
  • If the small bags have not dissolved after 20 minutes, heat the pot of water upwards. Do not let it boil with the bags inside.
