How Mardi Gras is celebrated

Mardi Gras is one of the most important festivities in New Orleans, Louisiana and Mobile, Alabama, USA. It's what carnival is called and it's celebrated before Ash Wednesday. It is a unique opportunity to get to know this country and some of its oldest traditions. For this, we show you a little how the Mardi Gras is celebrated .

The dates will vary between February 3 and March 9 and depend directly on the date on which Holy Week falls. However, it will always be the day before Ash Wednesday .

The carnival, properly speaking, begins on January 6, during the night of Epiphany . From that day it is normal to see floats, mask dances and King cakes . However, the largest festival coincides with Mardi Gras.

An important aspect of this festivity are the Mardi Gras brotherhoods, usually known as Krewes . They are clubs that organize the parades and dances during this date. They are responsible for making the floats, uniforms and all the paraphernalia for the celebration of Mardi Gras.

The party has French origin, for this reason, formerly, there were parades on Bourbon Street and others in the French Quarter. However, nowadays, due to the limited space in these streets and the large floats that are exhibited, the route has been changed. Although they follow some of these smaller parades.

Among the rocks or Krewes highlights the Comus, which is the oldest and participates in this carnival since 1857.

On January 6, the Twelfth Night Revelers club organizes a masked ball that marks the start of the carnival season.

Also, there are other clubs such as Elves of Oberon and High Priests of Mitrhas, experts in performing dances but without parading in public.
