How to learn to read and write Urdu

Urdu is an Indo-Aryan language with approximately 61 million speakers worldwide, according to the Ethnologue Report. Urdu is the official language of Pakistan, although there are also important Urdu language communities in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and India. Since the 12th century, Urdu has been written with a Perso-Arabic version of the script. In order to be able to read and write the Urdu language, beginners first have to learn to understand this script.

Steps to follow:

one

Download and print a script graphic of the Urdu alphabet. Glue a copy of the letter on the wall of a prominent place in your house, where you see it regularly. Study the board one letter at a time. Practice drawing new characters by hand, as it helps to memorize their shapes.

two

Familiarize yourself with the conceptual differences between writing in Spanish and Urdu . Urdu is written from right to left, which is the opposite direction to English. All letters have different forms depending on whether they are written at the beginning, middle or end of a word. Concentrate on learning the different forms of the letters, paying special attention to the forms that appear at the end of the words. This will help you know where one word ends and another begins.

3

Expand your Urdu vocabulary . The more Urdu words you can recognize at a glance, the more fluent you can read an Urdu text. Every time you learn a new word, practice writing it in Urdu script until you are sure you can reproduce it accurately without taking a copy of it into account.

4

Practice reading in Urdu. When you feel that you have mastered Urdu, and have acquired a basic vocabulary, it is time to apply what you have learned in practical situations. Buy a children's book written in Urdu, such as the basic vocabulary and simple sentence structure. Use an Urdu-English dictionary to check the translation of unknown words.

5

Study Urdu grammar This will allow you to build and write your own sentences in a precise language. Urdu speakers usually place the verb at the end of the sentence, which may seem strange to Spanish speakers.

Tips
  • Spend a regular amount of time each day to practice Urdu.
