How to make a salt volcano

If you are preparing a science project about volcanoes, you may think that you need to build an explosive mound of mass and clay. However, this type of volcano project is very common, and does not seem original as a science experiment. An alternative is to make a salt volcano, which shows how a volcano works without using the standard materials that would be used in a mud or paste volcano.

You will need to:
  • 6 cups flour
  • 2 cups of salt, 1 tablespoon of baking soda
  • 4 tablespoons of cooking oil
  • 2 cups of water
  • Food coloring (the color of your choice)
  • A cardboard box, newspapers
  • An empty bottle of soda
  • Glue
  • 1 tablespoon of dish soap
  • ΒΌ cup of white vinegar

Mix 2 cups of flour, 2 cups of salt, 4 tablespoons of oil and 2 cups of water in a bowl. Stir the ingredients with your hands until the combination forms a consistent paste.

Put a few drops of food coloring in the mixture, preferably brown or red to achieve the exterior color of a real volcano. Leave the dough aside.

Place a piece of cardboard on a table. Glue a bottle of soda in the center of the carton.

Add a spoonful of dish soap and 1 tablespoon of baking soda to the bottle, along with a little red vegetable dye and a cup of water. When you're ready to see the lava explode, add the vinegar to the bottle and quickly step back to await the results.
