What are the speed limits in Spain

The speed limits on Spanish roads are a permanent issue under discussion in Spain, because in countries around us with less restrictive standards, the accident rate is lower. However, we must also bear in mind that in the consequences of an accident have dramatic variations depending on the speed at which we circulate. In any case, so that you are aware of and can comply with the rules, in .com we explain in detail what the speed limits are in Spain.

Highways and highways

In this type of road the cars must circulate at a maximum of 120 kilometers per hour and, at least, 60. The maximum limit could be increased in the coming months as the Congress processes a Traffic Law project from which a new Circulation Code, which could include that in some sections of these roads it can be circulated at 130 kilometers per hour; but this has not yet been approved.

Conventional roads

We understand by conventional roads those that have shoulder of 1.5 meters and more than one lane for some of the senses. Cars can drive a maximum of 100 kilometers per hour and must not go below 50.

There is an exception and that is that they can exceed 20 kilometers per hour the maximum speed and always when the car they are driving is less than 100 kilometers per hour.

The reform of the Traffic Code could make the maximum on these roads go down to 90 kilometers per hour.

Rest of conventional roads

These roads are those that fail the requirements of the previous point. The maximum speed is 90 kilometers per hour and the minimum speed is 40. There is the same exception to increase the speed in case of overtaking than in the previous section.

Urban roads and crossings

The passenger cars may not exceed 50 kilometers per hour and, neither, lower than 25. The future Code of traffic can cause that in the next months, the maximum speed is reduced to 30 or 20 kilometers in certain circumstances.

Special areas

There are certain areas, such as school, residential and hospital areas, in which other organisms than the General Directorate of Traffic, usually the Town Halls, can establish specific limitations that reduce the maximum allowed. What the DGT does indicate is that in the hospital environment you can not touch the horn.
