How to determine the area of an oval
An oval is a geometric shape that looks like an elongated circle. Another name for an oval is "ellipse". It may be necessary to find the area of an oval in a middle school task, high school or college math class. The area of an oval is the amount of space contained within the shape. You can calculate the area of an oval by following a simple mathematical formula.
You will need to:- Tape measure or a ruler
- Calculator
one
Measure the length of the ellipse from "A" to "B" and divide by 2. This is known as "radius 1."
two
Measure the width of the oval through its center point. The center point will be half the length, this length is the length between point "A" and "B". Once the width is measured, divide this value by 2. This is known as "radius 2."
3
Multiply half the width by half the length. For example, if the length is 10 centimeters and the width is 6 centimeters, you would have to multiply 5 times 3 to get 15 centimeters.
4
Multiply the answer from Step 3 by pi, which is 3.14. In this example, you would have to multiply 15 by 3.14 to obtain an area of 47.1 square centimeters, which will be the area of the ellipse .
