How light works with water

When you look at the still water of a pool, pond or pool you can see your face reflected in it. The water acts as a mirror . If you look up from under water, the upper part of it will also act as a mirror. Try to do the following to learn something about how light works. You will need to:
  • A square container of glass or transparent plastic.
  • Water
  • Milk
  • A teaspoon
  • A sheet of paper
  • A book
  • A flashlight
Steps to follow:

First place the square container, filled with water, on a book. Fix a sheet of paper on one side. Close the curtains or turn off the light and turn on a flashlight as shown in the picture.

Then focus the flashlight directly and the beam of light goes in a straight line. Focus the light of the flashlight at an angle and the beam of light comes out at an angle on the paper.

To see the beam of light more clearly, throw a spoonful of milk and stir the container. Then try to illuminate the water from different angles to see how the beam of light bends.

Why it happens When the light shines directly in the water, it goes in a straight line. When the ray of light reaches the surface of the water at an angle, it is bounced back at an angle by the water.

  • In order to see better how the light acts on the water, it closes all the lights in the room completely.
