Can you collect unemployment and work part time?

For many of us, finding a job means automatically discarding the idea of continuing to collect unemployment, but in practice this is not the case. We find ourselves with the possibility of working part-time and continue receiving part of the unemployment benefit . There are a number of circumstances that can lead us to this situation:

  • We are collecting unemployment and find a part-time job
  • We have two part-time jobs and we lose one of them
  • We have a full-time job, and we modify the conditions of this, becoming part time

In general, the amount of subsidy we receive will decrease in proportion to how much our work hours increase.

How do unemployment and work interact?

In principle, this type of situation is calculated based on a working day of 40 hours a week, as well as in relation to the characteristics of the partial contract with respect to full-time contracts in that union of workers.

That is to say, we would only receive the number of hours we have to work until we complete a full workday, which will generally be 8 hours or the one stipulated by the workers' agreement in the sector.

Let's put an easy example to understand it. If we work 20 hours a week, in a sector where the normal is 40 hours, we would be working 50% of the day. So, if we previously charged a strike of 500 euros per month, now we would charge 250 euros per month.

Regarding the modifications that may occur in the time the benefit lasts, it remains intact as it was originally, only the amount of the fee varies.
