How to teach fractions to children cooking

Teaching children how to make fractions can be frustrating for both the student and the teacher. One of the tricks for teaching math to children is to find out how the child learns, whether it is with crafts, reading or doing. Cooking is a way to teach children about fractions . Cooking combines many types of learning and gives children the advantage of having a snack at the end.

You will need to:
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • 2-1 / 4 cups of flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 package of yeast
  • 1 cup of water
  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • Pizza mold
  • sauce
  • cheese
Steps to follow:

one

Explain to the children that when baking, cups and measuring spoons are used because sometimes a whole cup or teaspoon is necessary, and sometimes only a fraction, or a part of a whole, is necessary. Show children the cups and spoons to compare each set with the set.

two

Make a pizza with the children to help them understand the use of fractions. Use these ingredients for the dough: 2 ¼ cup flour, ½ teaspoon sugar, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 packet of yeast (1/4 kg), 1 cup of water and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil.

3

Show the children how to make the dough by mixing all the ingredients in a bowl. Point out all fractional measures and compare them with the set. Roll the dough and put it in a pizza pan.

4

Let the children scatter the sauce and cheese on the whole pizza. Explain everything again.

5

Discuss with fractions of dressings that children like. Put different ingredients in different parts of a fraction of the pizza, depending on how many children you have. Divide the pizza accordingly, for example, divide the pizza into two halves for two children, thirds for three children, rooms for four children and so on.

6

Put different tastes in different fractions of the pizza . If one out of four children likes mushrooms, just put the mushrooms on a quarter of the pizza. If two like pepperoni, put pepperoni in half.

7

Bake the pizza at 220 degrees for about 30 minutes. Discuss the fractions of the clock while cooking the pizza.

8

Cut the pizza into more slices than children . If you cut eight portions, show the children how two parts equal a quarter (1/4) of the pizza. Talk about other fractions before eating the pizza.

Tips
  • Children love learning by doing. Cooking helps remember math skills. Take advantage of all the opportunities you see and do the learning experiences until your child understands fractions well.
  • Write some of your fractions on the kitchen paper so children can see how it should be while the pizza is being made. You could also talk about equivalent fractions, such as 2/4 equals 1/2.
