How to add a border to an image in Photoshop

The edges in a photograph can make a big difference and with Photoshop you can easily add borders, once you learn to do it. Follow these steps to make your image stand out from the rest of the page with a border in Photoshop.

Start Photoshop and open the image to which you want to add a border.

To create a border around the entire image, open the Select menu and choose Select All. To create a border around a certain sector, use the Selection tool in the toolbar and select the area you want.

In the Select menu, select Modify, and then Border. In the dialog box, choose the pixel size of the border.

Locate the color palette on the left side of the screen. Click on the upper box and select a border color from the palette. Click on OK

Select Fill on the Edit menu. In the dialog box, choose the options that apply to the border.

Click on OK to see the border. If the results are not what you want, select Undo from the Edit menu to remove the fill and try again.

Use the Save As command on the File menu to save the new image.

Tips
  • The larger the pixel size, the thicker the edge
  • To create a dashed-looking border, select Dissolve from the Fill command options.
  • Before editing an image, save the file with a different name, select Save as from the File menu. This allows you to edit the image without having to worry about the original.
