How to activate the Internet service

Internet access at home requires a subscription to an Internet service plan. The service plan guarantees a predetermined data rate to users on a monthly basis. With the plan, authorized users can visit websites, listen to music, download multimedia content and watch videos online. Contact an Internet service provider to start using the Internet in your home.

You will need to:
  • Personal computer
  • Internet service plan
Steps to follow:

one

Contact an Internet service provider (ISP) . An ISP is a company that provides Internet access for a house. Using a variety of technologies such as DSL, broadband, cable or dial-up, the service provider connects your computer to the Internet. Schedule a meeting with a local ISP to discuss the plans and services. Most Internet service providers (ISPs) are listed in telephone directories and yellow pages, and can be accessed by calling their number.

two

Choose an Internet service provider and an appropriate plan for your budget and the intended use. Most Internet service plans vary in Internet data speed. The speed determines what the average download speed and the speed of a web page will be. A basic services plan, for example, will usually have a data rate of 1 Mbps and lower, and have a low price. Elite plans will have data speeds of 5 Mbps or higher, but they are more expensive. Select the provider and the plan that works best for you.

3

Let the ISP install the Internet package. After choosing a plan, the service provider will schedule an appointment with a technician to visit and install the necessary hardware. Allow access to the computer and any telephone or Ethernet ports, so that the technician can install the cables, broadband or DSL boxes, or any other machine necessary to access the Internet. After installation, the technician will give you additional instructions for new Internet users, if necessary. If you have selected a dial-up plan, you can install the Internet service by yourself using a few steps. Simply insert a telephone cable into your power outlet on the back of the computer (through the phone port next to the Ethernet port) and follow the instructions for your new service.

4

Connect to the Internet. Select your browser - Internet Explorer, Firefox or chrome, to name just three - by double clicking on its icon from the desktop. If there is no icon, select the Internet program from the applications mentioned in Microsoft Windows in "All Programs."

Tips
  • If you have a laptop, you can access the Internet in many public establishments such as a restaurant, library or school. Access the wireless network settings to display a list of connections available for the Internet. Click on one titled "public access", "free Wi-Fi" or one that has the name of the establishment that appears somewhere.
