How to find out the year of an external Mercury engine
If you own a Mercury outboard engine, and plan to rebuild, modify or service it, you must first gather some essential information such as model year to ensure the purchase of compatible parts, as necessary. You can also follow these steps if you are simply curious to find out the year of your Mercury engine .

Put the final end of the engine propeller pointing towards you, and see the right side of the engine mount.

Locate the serial number plate. The top number on the plate is the serial number, but the number directly below it is the year (four digits) of its manufacture. If you can not find the plate, see the Resources section of this article for visual help. If the year is not legible, proceed to the next step.

Navigate to the second option in the Resources section of this article and find the serial number of your engine. The serial numbers are ordered by horsepower, so you will also have to check the power indicated on the outside of the plastic engine cover. In the chart, you should look at the two serial numbers between which your serial number is located. When you find them, look for the year indicated on the line of the lowest number. This is the year of manufacture of your engine .
