What are the bones of the hand called?

Do you want to know what name the bones of the hands receive? The truth is that in each hand are located almost thirty bones of the total human skeleton. Likewise, these bones require mobile joints to be able to perform movements with dexterity. Note that the hand is divided into three parts to describe your bones and that is precisely what we explain in this article about what are called the bones of the hand.

The bones of the hand

The total number of bones in the hand is 27 and these are divided into:

  • Bones of the wrist or carpus
  • Bones of the palm or metacarpus
  • Fingertip or digital bones

In addition to the skeleton, the hands also require a set of muscles and ligaments to achieve all movements.

Wrist bones

The bones of the wrist, also called carpal or carpal, are eight and are arranged in two rows or groups:

  • Bones of the distal row: trapezoid, trapezoid, large and hamate. In the image of step 1, you can locate them with the numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4.
  • Bones of the proximal row: pisiform, pyramidal, lunate and scaphoid. They correspond to 5, 6, 7 and 8 in the image.

The carps are embedded in a small cavity that is formed with the bones of the forearm, that is, the ulna and the radius although in reality the ulna is not articulated with any of the bones of the wrist.

Bones of the palm of the hand

As for the bones of the palm of the hand, metacarpus or metacarpals, they can also be divided according to their location, that is, the finger to which they correspond ordered from the thumb outwards:

  • First metacarpal
  • Second metacarpal
  • Third metacarpal
  • Fourth metacarpal
  • Fifth metacarpal

Bones of the fingers of the hand

The fingers of the hands or digital are called phalanges and each of the fingers has three phalanges, except for the thumb that has two:

  • Proximal phalanges: located at the base of the finger, in the part known as knuckles.
  • Middle phalanges: nonexistent in the thumb, they are located between the proximal and the distal.
  • Distal phalanges: located at the end of the fingers.
