How to convert square feet to yards

One square meter is equal to nine square feet . Or, 1 square yard. = 9 square feet

Divide the number of square feet by nine, and you will get the number of square yards of carpet you need. (square feet / 9 = square yards)

If you still do not know how many square feet you have, measure the length and width of the area in feet. Next, multiply the length by the width to know the number of square feet. A room of 10 feet by 18 feet equals 180 square feet. To find square yards, divide the total by nine. 180 square feet / 9 = 20 square yards. In other words: (Length in feet x width in feet) / 9 = square yards.

Tips
  • With gardening products, remember that you will have to take the depth of the product you will consider. Some garden products have square yards in terms of the indicated depth. So, for example, if you are going to use topsoil at a depth of 6 inches and the bag from the yard lists gives depth of 3 inches, you will have to use double the amount.
